Richard Bales
Bass and backup vocals
One of the founding members of Turning Point, Richard has been playing bass since 1965. He started his musical training on the piano at age six, and in his early teens branched out to play guitar, ukulele and bass. His interest in arranging led him to study at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto.
Richard has played in a number of bands in the roles of bassist, keyboardist, guitarist and flautist. He also performed professionally for a number of years as a bassist with a Toronto-based pianist/singer, playing at a number of hotels and nightclubs in and around Toronto. He was solo performer in a video taping of the music of Bob DyIan produced at Scarborough College in 1969.
Currently in addition to his work with Turning Point, Richard is the regular bassist for the Deloraines, acts in the role of the resident bassist for the Corktown Ukulele Jam, was one of the bassists featured in the tribute to the late Daisy DeBolt at Hugh’s Room in 2012, accompanied Rita Chiarelli in concert, and has performed with JazzFm’s host of Cafe Latino, Laura Fernandez. Richard also has been engaged to provide backing for a number of artists in recording sessions.
